Soudah Travel Guide: Juniper Forests and Aseer’s Mountain Views

Plan a Soudah mountain visit with forest walks, escarpment views and practical advice for combining the highlands with Rijal Almaa.

Soudah (السودة) is where a journey out of Abha becomes a mountain visit: exposed rock, juniper woodland and steep western slopes change the scale of the landscape. Give it an unhurried half-day, or longer if walking is the reason for your trip.

Choose the View and the Walk Separately

A panoramic stop and a forest walk offer different experiences. Start with an accessible public viewpoint when the mountain is clear. Look beyond the nearest ridge: the slopes fall toward the lower country of Tihamah, with successive ridgelines making the change in elevation visible.

For walking, choose an established route with a clear return point. The wooded setting rewards smaller observations, including the shape of old junipers and the contrast between their foliage and exposed rock. A long drive between viewpoints can leave surprisingly little time outdoors.

The Juniper Landscape

Juniper is one of Soudah’s characteristic trees, alongside other vegetation including wild olive and acacia. Seasonal rain changes the ground cover, so photographs taken after rain may look greener than the scene during your visit. Cloud can reveal one ridge while concealing another; a view does not need a completely blue sky to be worthwhile.

Stay on existing paths around mature trees. Parking on vegetated ground damages the very landscape visitors come to enjoy. Bring back picnic waste, including fruit peel, and avoid feeding wildlife.

Combining Soudah with Rijal Almaa

The Al Samma mountain road connects the Soudah side with the descent toward Rijal Almaa. This makes a highland-to-Tihamah journey possible, but it adds substantial mountain driving. Choose that combination when both the road conditions and your available daylight suit it.

For a more relaxed day from Abha, keep Soudah as the principal outing and leave the village of Rijal for another day. If you stay in the lower country, reverse the priorities: enjoy its heritage in cooler hours, then give the ascent its own time.

A Practical Half-Day

Make one viewpoint your first stop, follow it with a modest woodland walk, then pause before returning. This is an editorial suggestion, not a marked official circuit. Carry a light outer layer and water, and reassess the plan if thick fog makes driving or walking difficult.

The announced Soudah Peaks development is separate from a promise that particular hotels, activities or visitor facilities are operating. Build your day around places whose access you can confirm, especially if a cable car or organised adventure activity is essential to your plans.
