Quba Mosque and Southern Madinah: The Historic Route Beyond the Prophet’s Mosque

Explore Quba Mosque, Al-Jum’ah Mosque and the historic southern route of Madinah connected with the Prophet’s arrival after the Hijrah.

South of central Madinah, Quba preserves one of the clearest geographical connections with the Hijrah. The area was once a village of gardens and palms outside the main settlement, and the route toward central Madinah still connects several important early Islamic sites.

Quba Mosque

Quba Mosque was established in 622 CE following Prophet Muhammad's arrival in the Madinah area and is recognized as the first mosque built in Islam.

The mosque seen today is the result of many expansions and reconstructions. A major new expansion project announced in 2022 remains the largest development in its history, so the modern architecture should not be confused with the physical form of the original seventh-century mosque.

What Quba Was Like

Historical sources describe Quba as a settlement of gardens and date palms roughly two to three miles outside early Madinah.

Understanding that setting is useful: the mosque did not begin as an isolated monument surrounded by a modern city. It belonged to a cultivated village on the approach to Madinah.

Al-Jum'ah Mosque

About 900 meters north of Quba is Al-Jum'ah Mosque.

Saudi heritage sources identify this as the location where Prophet Muhammad performed the Friday prayer while traveling from Quba toward Madinah after the Hijrah in 622.

The present mosque is a later structure that has undergone rebuilding and expansion, so its historical importance comes from the location rather than survival of the original building.

Walking the Historical Direction

The relationship between Quba and Al-Jum'ah is more informative than seeing them as unrelated attractions. One marks the Prophet's stay at Quba; the other lies on the route toward the center of Madinah.

Modern development has transformed the landscape, but the short distance between them still makes the historical movement easier to visualize.

Current Development Around Quba

Quba continues to receive major visitor and urban improvements. Because construction and access patterns can change, check current local guidance before relying on an older map or entrance arrangement.
