The Prophet’s Mosque and Museums Nearby: A Visitor Guide to Central Madinah
For Muslim visitors, the Prophet's Mosque is the spiritual center of Madinah. It is also surrounded by museums and exhibitions that explain the mosque's architectural development, the Prophetic biography and Islamic manuscript heritage.
The Prophet's Mosque
Prophet Muhammad established the mosque after arriving in Madinah in 622 CE. Its original structure used stone foundations, palm-trunk columns and a roof of palm material.
The mosque was enlarged repeatedly under the Prophet, the Rightly Guided Caliphs, Umayyad and Abbasid rulers, later Muslim dynasties, the Ottoman Empire and the Saudi state. The modern complex therefore represents many centuries of expansion rather than the physical survival of one seventh-century building.
Al-Rawdah Al-Sharifah
Al-Rawdah Al-Sharifah lies between the Prophet's chamber and his pulpit. Because demand greatly exceeds its limited capacity, access is currently organized through the official Nusuk system.
Permit procedures can change, so check Nusuk immediately before your visit rather than relying on an old schedule.
The Green Dome and the Prophet's Chamber
The Green Dome marks the area above the chamber where Prophet Muhammad was buried, alongside Abu Bakr Al-Siddiq and Umar Ibn Al-Khattab.
The chamber itself is not an archaeological exhibit open for entry. Visitors follow designated routes around the relevant part of the mosque.
Non-Muslim Visitors
Saudi Arabia's official tourist eVisa terms state that non-Muslims are not permitted to enter the Prophet's Mosque or its premises. Non-Muslim travelers can still visit Madinah City and many cultural attractions elsewhere in the city.
Prophet's Mosque Expansion Exhibition
The Prophet's Mosque Expansion Exhibition is located on the southern side of the mosque. It explains the architectural and engineering development of the mosque across its long history through models, artifacts and interactive displays.
International Fair and Museum of the Prophet's Biography and Islamic Civilization
Located beside the Prophet's Mosque, this museum uses interactive technologies, models and digital presentations to explain the Prophet's biography and the development of Madinah.
As of 2026, current exhibits include material on the Hijrah, the Prophet's chamber and pulpit, and the urban landscape of Madinah during the Prophetic period.
As Safiyyah Museum and Park
South of the Prophet's Mosque, As Safiyyah Museum and Park contains modern multimedia museum experiences. Current exhibitions use immersive displays to present religious history and the Prophetic biography.
Haram Exceptional Manuscripts Showroom
The southern courtyards also host a manuscripts exhibition displaying Islamic manuscripts and heritage objects. In June 2026, the responsible authority confirmed daily visiting arrangements for both this showroom and the mosque-expansion exhibition.
Because exhibition schedules are operational information, confirm current hours when you arrive.
How to Combine the Visits
Do not treat the museums as substitutes for the mosque. They work best after you have seen the central area because models and displays help explain architectural features that are difficult to understand when standing inside such a large modern complex.
